How to Convert a Scanned PDF into an Editable Word File
Why you cannot select text in a scanned PDF
When a page goes through a scanner, what gets stored is a photograph. The letters you see are pixels arranged in the shape of letters, so clicking and dragging selects nothing.
OCR — optical character recognition — reads that picture and writes out the characters it recognises, laying them underneath the image so the page looks the same but is now searchable.
What to check before you start
- A clean, straight scan recognises far better than a skewed one.
- 300 DPI is usually enough; higher mostly costs time.
- Pick the right language pack before running, not after.
The steps
- Open the scanned PDF.
- Run text recognition over the pages you need.
- Export the result to Word.
Everything happens on your own computer. The file is never uploaded anywhere.
If the result looks close but not perfect, re-scan the worst page rather than correcting it by hand — recognition quality depends far more on the input than on the settings.
